Home Theatre Tips

Component systems:
Better Sound and more flexibility

Receivers

Receivers

A good home theater receiver offers many things that you can't get with a boxed system. In addition to improved sound, you might also expect to find advanced surround sound decoders for true theater sound, or video switching capability, which lets you combine all of your video signals and send them to your TV through a single video cable. Many receivers offer advanced connections for hooking up additional speakers, personal video recorders and video game systems. But don't get overwhelmed by all the bells and whistles.

What to look for

• Surround sound processor—Higher-end models include advanced signal decoders—like Dolby Digital EX and DTS-ES—not found on less expensive models.
• Power—Make sure the receiver has enough total power to drive your speakers cleanly. Even if you don't plan to run your system at top volume, more power will help your speakers sound cleaner at low volumes and keep the bass tight.
• Connection options—If you plan to add to your system later, make sure the rear panel has all of the jacks and connectors you will need.

These are the basics of what you need to know.

Speakers

SpeakersIf you're short on space or want something inconspicuous, check out a satellite speaker system. You'll get everything you need to get started in one package, complete with surround speakers and a center channel. The surround speakers are small and easy to work into your décor, and sound quality is generally good. Many systems even include a subwoofer.

To really tailor your speaker system to your environment, consider purchasing each component separately. A good set of bookshelf or tower speakers will sound a lot better than small satellites (especially if you listen to a lot of music), and you will have much more freedom to pick the components that work best for your room. And the best part? You can get as big a subwoofer as you want so you can really feel those big explosions.

What to look for

• Power handling capacity—If you really want to crank it up, look for speakers that can handle more wattage. You'll get cleaner sound and less distortion at higher volumes.
• Powered subwoofer—An internal amplifier powers the speaker(s) in the subwoofer. Your receiver won't have to work as hard, making overall bass response deeper and smoother.
• Speaker construction—While paper drivers are fine, materials like polypropylene and aluminum are stronger and will make your sound even better.
These are the basics of what you need to know. If you want more information,

Cables

CablesCables are the most overlooked items in any home audio setup. Good cables are essential if you expect your equipment to perform at its best—in fact, you won't be able to experience true surround sound without a digital audio cable. If you plan to put together your own home theater system, you should expect to devote around 10 percent of your total budget to cables. We carry a wide selection of cables for all of your home theater needs. Check out our site or talk to one of our trained Product Specialists to determine which options are best for you.
